Violet Transmissions’ rock/indie/power-pop sound is accompanied by an equally genre-agnostic lyrical approach. Eschewing the usual strategy of trickling teaser-hype, the VTs remained quietly underground, developing their sound and approach until emerging in 2014 with their first project, She Blinded Me With Science. Vocalist and songwriter Tim Bussey paid for his education (he is professor of neuroscience at the University of Cambridge) playing drums in and eventually fronting ska/pop bands in Vancouver, Canada, notably Bad English, Rubber Biscuit (later Big Medicine) and Skaboom! Session vocalist Melissa Baker is a busy performing and recording singer as well as actress. VTs rhythm section consists of Andy Borman (Cambridge session bassist with Revelator, Billican, Beth Walthew, Makossa) and Garry Bowler (drums) who has worked with Dirty Lions, Mournblade, Medicine Hat, Dennis Stratton of Iron Maiden, and Motorhead, whom he was asked to join after working on material for the March or Die album. Neil Cowlan (guitar) is a session guitarist and songwriter; his playing can be heard on many tracks from a variety of artists, most recently Myles Sanko, Simon Kent, Grace Sarah and his own Blues project and Soul band Revelator. In 2014 Violet Transmissions emerged seemingly out of nowhere with their first project, She Blinded Me With Science, a 6-song EP and video made in collaboration with ScienceGrrl and film-maker Ben Roper to support women in science (Bussey/Cowlan producing). The title song features samples provided by Thomas Dolby from his original version, and the video features a number of women scientists, and TV scientists as played by Tatiana Maslany and Evelyne Brochu in the hit series Orphan Black. The EP includes a number of other musicians, including members of the platinum-selling Canadian band the Odds, previously the band for Warren Zevon and George Martin, and drummer Pat Stewart, ex- Bryan Adams band. Songs on the EP were co-produced by Keith Wilkinson (Squeeze; Jools Holland), and mixed and mastered by John Cornfield (Muse, Razorlight, Supergrass, Oasis). Artwork for the project was provided by Roeland Verhallen. The VTs next release, Let It Go, is in production.
